Disqus Channel System

A long time ago, well...three years ago, in a galaxy far far away (um, actually this Galaxy) there was the Disqus channel system. It's weird how things seem like forever ago and like yesterday all at the same time.

There were alot of aspects about posting on Disqus that I found interesting. Those who spent any amount of time interacting with me back then should remember I started JAG'S Looney Bin, I actually did so to offer an alternative to the Psychology channel after becoming frustrated with the moderators on the Psychology channel. I have always found the psychological aspects of people interacting anonymously online interesting, the channel system as it was and many of the individuals participating in it provoked reactions I'd never have guessed without witnessing it and indeed I was right in the middle of it.

Shortly after starting to post I was made a moderator on the Psychology channel, shortly after that my life was threatened online for the first time.πŸ˜…  Initially I didn't find it funny whatsoever, in fact I had what was surely about the same physical reaction as would many people with a gun literally pointed at their head for the first time. I sweat and shook instantly becoming angry, I don't remember my exact verbiage typed in response but to be sure it was not passive.

As I continued to post and interact with people alliances and animosity formed as well as, eventually, a sort of "gang mentality". People I had never met,  and likely never would, truly became friends or foes. About the same feelings provoked by "real life " relationships happened in response to betrayals or endearment. Alliances formed,  primarily between people that mainly posted on specific channels together, and feuds developed between some of these groups, literally no different than can be observed in "real life ".

I saw several examples of couples forming as well which sometimes even led to people moving in with each other. I personally formed friendships with several people leading to years long relationships that still continue to this day and have met some of my friends in person despite living many miles away. This includes having driven over 12 hours and spending a day with Fred Ziffel at his home, going to bars, and driving around with him as he showed me his home town. (We got drunk AF while we were at itπŸ€ͺ🀣)

Another interesting thing to me was that an idea would be formed as to what people might look like and how they might sound talking based on the online interactions. In fact even after talking to people I'd hear the conceived voice when reading their posts knowing it wasn't how they actually sounded. I think the last observation has alot to do with people's profile picture and their posting tendencies, either way I find it interesting that my mind does that.

I kind of still miss the channel system. I spent so many days laughing my ass off on Banned Camp I couldn't guess how many hundreds of days there were.
